Edgeborough pupils shine in VEX competition. Twelve Year 5 and Year 6 pupils at Edgeborough have been honing their skills in VEX Robotics during an after-school club. Over two terms, they explored robotics, coding, and engineering using VEX IQ kits. This hands-on experience prepared them for the Rapid Relay competition at Charterhouse on 30th January.
What is VEX Robotics?
VEX Robotics is a global platform that helps young learners develop problem-solving, teamwork, and engineering skills. It combines mechanical design, coding, and strategic thinking to create robots that can complete real-world tasks. By participating in VEX Robotics, pupils strengthen their STEM knowledge and gain practical experience in robotics and programming.

The Competition: Rapid Relay
The Rapid Relay challenge required teams to design and build a robot capable of picking up a ball and launching it into a goal. Pupils competed in qualifying rounds, a knockout-style final, and a skills-based coding round. The event was led by Mr Andrew Thomson, Head of Design Engineering at Charterhouse, with independent judges from industry and Charterhouse Sixth Form students providing support.
Edgeborough’s Standout Performance
Edgeborough’s Year 6 team impressed the judges with their teamwork, adaptability, and coding skills. Their ability to overcome design challenges and refine their strategy throughout the competition earned them the prestigious Judges Award. Judges praised their problem-solving approach and expertise in programming the robot’s autonomous functions.

Why VEX Robotics Matters for STEM Learning
VEX Robotics is more than just a competition. It enhances STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) learning by making it engaging and hands-on. The program aligns with STEAM (STEM + Arts) education principles, fostering creativity and innovation. Pupils develop computational thinking, logical reasoning, and engineering confidence—all essential for future careers in technology and science.
Looking Ahead
Edgeborough’s robotics team is eager to tackle the next VEX Robotics challenge, which will be announced in April. With their strong foundation in coding and engineering, they are ready to compete again next year.
Edgeborough is proud to offer enriching STEM opportunities that inspire young learners. Robotics competitions like these prepare pupils for a future where technology and innovation drive success.
