Edgeborough was delighted to host its inaugural Esports Skills Day in partnership with the Learning Skills Trust and Daigon Esports on Tuesday, 12 May. A big welcome to the ‘Edgeborough Eagles’, our very own ESports team that performed brilliantly throughout the competition.
The event was a fantastic success, with pupils demonstrating exceptional engagement, enthusiasm and competitive spirit throughout the day. It was inspiring to see such a strong display of skill development across all participants.
During the morning, Daigon delivered three skills-based challenges, bringing together pupils from Edgeborough, Windlesham and Pennthorpe Schools. Mixed into new teams, pupils collaborated with peers they had not previously met, working together to tackle each challenge and build both their teamwork and problem-solving skills.
The three challenges aligned with the Daigon and PSB skills frameworks were:
- Thinking
- Resilience
- Communication & Collaboration
In the afternoon, pupils went back into their school teams and competed in a knockout match of Minecraft – Capture the Flag. Pennthorpe came out on top beating Windlesham in the final. The two Edgeborough teams battled it out for 3rd and 4th place!
Prizes were awarded at the end of the day to those pupils who had particularly stood out for their teamwork, sportsmanship and helping others. Avery Bonner was one of those awarded.
How Esports Supports Edgeborough’s Vision for Digital Education
At Edgeborough, our approach to digital education is designed to equip pupils with the skills, confidence, and understanding they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world. Esports plays an important role within this wider vision, supporting both our curriculum and co-curricular provision.
A Dual Approach to Digital Learning
Our digital education programme is delivered across two key areas: curricular learning and co-curricular enrichment.
Curricular Learning
Within taught lessons, pupils engage with a wide range of digital skills and technologies, ensuring they gain practical, real-world experience. Areas of focus include:
- Web design
- Podcast production
- Video recording and editing
- Coding, including game development
- Robotics
- Artificial Intelligence
- Online safety
This broad curriculum enables pupils to understand how digital skills apply beyond the classroom and prepares them for future opportunities in an increasingly digital landscape.
Co-Curricular Learning
Alongside lessons, pupils can further develop their interests through lunchtime and after-school digital clubs. These sessions introduce a more collaborative and competitive element, providing an ideal space for Esports to align with other activities such as robotics.
Currently, our Esports activities are centred around Minecraft Education, offering a structured and accessible introduction, however there is lots of exciting potential to expand into additional platforms as the programme grows.
Why Esports?
Esports serves as a powerful engagement tool. Many pupils are already enthusiastic about gaming and Esports provides a natural way to channel this interest into meaningful learning experiences.
Importantly, our aim goes beyond gameplay. While many pupils are familiar with gaming itself, we seek to broaden their understanding of Esports as an industry — highlighting the diverse career pathways it offers. These include roles in:
- Event management
- Broadcasting and media production
- Marketing and content creation
- Game design and development
- Team management and coaching

Through this balanced and forward-thinking approach, Edgeborough continues to ensure that pupils are not only digitally literate, but also inspired by the possibilities the digital world has to offer.
