Year 5 Pupils Explore Arundel Castle as Part of Their Learning Journey

This week, our Year 5 pupils embarked on an enriching visit to Arundel Castle, an exciting introduction to their upcoming topic on Castles, which they will study next half-term. The trip offered an immersive learning experience that brought history to life in a way that only such outings can.

One pupil summed up the awe of the day by exclaiming, “This castle is amazing, it’s overwhelmingly big!”  The day was filled with opportunities for the children to explore key historical aspects of the castle. They delved into its fascinating past, learning that Arundel Castle originally began as a motte-and-bailey structure and discovering how parts of it were destroyed during the English Civil War for siding with King Charles.

The children were particularly captivated by the challenges of medieval warfare as they stood at the base of the towering motte, imagining what it would have been like to run up the steep incline to attack the keep—an almost impossible feat!

The visit to Arundel Castle is one of the many ways we at Edgeborough aim to deepen our pupils’ understanding of history. It provided a perfect context for the pupils to engage with the subject matter in a tangible, meaningful way that classroom learning alone cannot always achieve. Experiences like these are invaluable in reinforcing lessons, sparking curiosity, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

At Edgeborough, we believe that school trips form an essential part of a child’s educational journey, enriching their understanding and enhancing the lessons learned within the classroom.
