Curriculum

Edgeborough is where pupils of diverse abilities find their academic home. Regardless of their initial aptitude, every pupil experiences significant growth during their tenure at the school. Our curriculum is not just about transmitting facts; it is about fostering progressive learning and skill-building. We aim to cultivate learners who engage critically and creatively with knowledge, rather than simply recalling information.

Academic Curriculum

Our pupils enjoy a wide range of subjects across the curriculum allowing them to embark on an exciting learning journey as they progress through the school.

Academic success at Edgeborough is built on:

  • Outstanding teaching
  • Excellent resources
  • Small classes
  • Development of thinking skills and language work from an early age
  • Reinforcement of core skills at an early age
  • Positive co-operation and support for pupils and the school from parents

The great majority of our pupils will go onto outstanding and selective Senior Schools and a good number will enter their Senior
Schools having taken their scholarship examinations.

Nursery, Pre-School and Reception Years (EYFS)

In the Nursery, Pre-School and Reception years, there are seven key areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development;
  • Communication  and Language;
  • Physical Development;
  • Literacy;
  • Mathematics;
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World;
  • Expressive Art and Design.

Years 1 – 2

In Years 1-2, the pupils follow a curriculum informed by, but broader than the National Curriculum. Additional time is given to the creative arts such as Music, Art and Design Technology and Sport. ICT and French are also taught.

Timetabled subjects:

For literacy, the Pre Prep use the very successful ‘Animaphonics.’ programme and for Maths we employ a hands-on, purposeful approach to achieve mastery of key concepts.

Our bespoke enquiry model encompasses key subject areas of Science, Humanities and Art in a way that is interlinked and has meaning and relevance for the pupils.

Beyond this, specialist teachers offer weekly lessons in PE, Music, French and Forest School.

Years 3 – 5

All the subjects outlined for Years 1 & 2 are continued and enhanced. The overall curriculum is designed to ensure pupils acquire, and become comfortable with, the skills needed for success in senior school entrance pre-tests in Year 6, Common Entrance and beyond.

Scholarship

Future Scholars Programme

Edgeborough’s Future Scholars programme helps identify and then nurture those pupils with exceptional talent across key areas of school life. The programme seeks to extend a pupil’s particular gifts and aptitudes, allowing them to reach their full potential as they move towards the culmination of their journey at Edgeborough and begin their transition to Senior School at the end of Year 8. Pupils who show potential for senior school scholarships are selected for the programme, initially in the summer term of Year 6. A scholarship application is in no way compulsory as part of this programme. We expect Future Scholars to be exemplary ambassadors of Edgeborough, modelling excellence but also encouraging their peers, fostering talent in others and being fantastic role models to those around them. Becoming a potential scholar at Edgeborough will, therefore, bring with it a responsibility as well as providing extended and exciting opportunities. We expect all potential scholars to whole heatedly embrace every opportunity offered as part of this programme.
